Project Overview

This is an interdiscinplinatory project in collaboration with students from Fashion, Textiles, and Design Product courses.

The project aims to engage communities for generating sustainable economies and increase the resilience of selected UK coastal and inland communities, through the use of co-design practices and byleveraging scientific data.

The research question is:

How can applied and strategic design processes and approaches (e.g. servicesproducts, co-design) stimulate knowledge exchange and creative thinkingfor generating partnerships and practices that harness, value, and care for theneeds of the oceans' human and natural ecosystem?

Our group was selected to be working at Ilfracombe, North Devon. Through field research, expert interviews, and scientific data, we noticed that the town depends heavily on tourism, but the seasonality of it results in few employment opportunities, higher living costs, and greater living pressure for local residents during off-peak seasons.

Therefore, we designed a dynamic sculpture on the sea, providing new solutions to build a circular economy via tourism.
